Sea cucumber

The sea cucumber (sea cucumber) is a Echinodermata Class Holothuroidea, with an elongated body and a tough skin, which is located on the seabed.

It's considered a delicacy in the East, particularly in Malaysia, China, Japan and Indonesia, where it is also used for its supposed medicinal properties.

The popular name of sea cucumber in China is haishen, which could be roughly translated as ginseng of the sea.
And 'in fact used by the Chinese folk medicine as a general tonic, with its high protein content (55%) and low in fat (less than 2%).
According to Chinese folk medicine, the sea cucumber nourishes the blood and vital essence, invigorates the kidneys (treats disorders of the kidneys and reproductive organs), and moisturizes dry (especially intestines). In folk medicine, sea cucumber is used as a treatment for weakness, impotence, debility due to age, constipation due to intestinal dryness, frequent and diuresis. Traditionally is served as soup.

Some varieties of sea cucumber (known as gamat in Malaysia) are considered to have excellent healing properties, in particular tissue, and some pharmaceutical companies have based much of their production on the sea cucumber. Gamat extracts are prepared in oils, creams and cosmetics, and some products are also suitable for internal use.
Some studies on sea cucmber, it has emerged not only effective in repairing damaged tissues, but also in helping the healing of wounds, as well as reducing any scars.

From a biochemical, sea cucumber is a marine animal like starfish, containing mucopolysaccharides (eg chondroitin), proteins, saponins, vitamins A and C, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, sodium and carbohydrates.
The University of Queensland Center for Drug Design has conducted a series of cromotografici studies that have shown the presence of a huge number of components in sea cucumber. Some of the compounds, identified as unique in the animal kingdom, including two types of oligoglicosidi triterpenoidali, one containing a group of sulfur. Molecules of this kind are abundant in the plant kingdom, but rather rare in the animal.

Having a body cartilage, the sea cucumber is a rich source of mucopolysaccharides, particularly chondroitin sulfate, known for its properties to reduce arthritic pain, especially those associated with osteoarthritis. Only 3 grams per day of sea cucumber have been shown to aid in reducing arthralgia.

Sea cucumber seems to also balance the power prostaglandin, which is the substance that regulates inflammatory processes.

Sea cucumber contains saponins (triterpene glycoside). These compounds have a structure similar to the active constituents of ginseng and other plants from the famous tonic quality. Several pharmacological studies have documented how the sea cucumber saponins may be responsible for the actions documented anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer marine environment of this animal.
The extract of sea cucumber also contains two other anti-inflammatory fractions. One, characterized by typical fatty acids of fish (eicosapentenoico acid) and can therefore be used in place of fish oil to reduce the inflammation typical of secondary metabolism of fat and to tone the heart and brain. The other is a mixture of branched chain fatty acids, especially acid metiltetradecanoico. This compound is a potent inhibitor of enzima lipoossigenasi: inhibitors of this enzyme are the key components of the development of some new drugs that are being studied for asthma, ulcerative colitis and arttrite.
Moreover, there was an inhibitor of cancer in some preliminary studies on the cells of prostate cancer and other human cancer cells.

Taken orally, it can be an excellent anti-inflammatory agent to deal with different types of arthritis, tendinitis, sports injuries and joint pains. It is widely used in homeopathy and is 25 times more potent as an analgesic and aspirin to reduce inflammation. Many consumers have found that the sea cucumber has anti-inflammatory properties far superior to many medicinal herbs as well as synthetic drugs such as aspirin.
